The 2019 RDR Corporate Accountability Index evaluates 24 companies, listed below. Researchers will examine overarching “parent” company policies and practices, in addition to the disclosed policies and practices of selected services and/or local operating companies (depending on company structure).
For the 2019 RDR Index, we have added two new telecommunications companies (Deutsche Telekom and Telenor). We have also expanded our evaluation of cloud services for five internet companies (Google, Mail.Ru, Microsoft, Samsung, and Tencent).
Telecommunications companies: The 2019 RDR Index ranks 12 telecommunications companies. For each of these companies we evaluate global group-level policies for relevant indicators plus the home-country operating subsidiary’s pre-paid and post-paid mobile service, and fixed-line broadband service where offered, as follows:
- América Móvil (Mexico) — pre- and post-paid mobile (Telcel)
- AT&T (US) — pre- and post- paid mobile, fixed-line broadband
- Axiata (Malaysia) — pre- and post-paid mobile (Celcom)
- Bharti Airtel (India) — pre- and post-paid mobile, fixed-line broadband
- Deutsche Telekom (Germany) — pre- and post-paid mobile, fixed-line broadband
- Etisalat (UAE) — pre- and post-paid mobile, fixed-line broadband
- MTN (South Africa) — pre- and post-paid mobile
- Ooredoo (Qatar) — pre- and post-paid mobile, fixed-line broadband
- Orange (France) — pre- and post-paid mobile, fixed-line broadband
- Telefónica (Spain) — pre- and post-paid mobile (Movistar), fixed-line broadband
- Telenor (Norway) — pre- and post-paid mobile, fixed-line broadband
- Vodafone (UK) — pre- and post-paid mobile, fixed-line broadband
Internet and mobile ecosystem companies: The 2019 RDR Index evaluates 12 internet and mobile ecosystem companies. For the 2019 RDR Index, we have expanded our evaluation of cloud services for five companies: Google, Mail.Ru, Microsoft, Samsung, and Tencent. For each company we examine up to five services, as follows:
- Apple (US) — iOS mobile ecosystem, iMessage, iCloud
- Baidu (China) — Baidu Search, Baidu Cloud, Baidu PostBar
- Facebook (US) — Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, Messenger
- Google (US) — Search, Gmail, Youtube, Android mobile ecosystem, Google Drive
- Kakao (South Korea) — Kakao Search, Kakao Mail, KakaoTalk
- Mail.Ru (Russia) — Vkontakte, Mail.ru email, Mail.ru Agent messaging, Mail.Ru Cloud
- Microsoft (US) — Bing, Outlook.com, Skype, OneDrive
- Oath (US) — Yahoo Mail, Tumblr
- Samsung (South Korea) — Samsung implementation of Android, Samsung Cloud
- Tencent (China) — QZone, QQ, WeChat, Tencent Cloud
- Twitter (US) — Twitter, Periscope
- Yandex (Russia) — Yandex Mail, Yandex Search, Yandex Disk (cloud storage)
