Afef Abrougui is a consultant and researcher working at the intersection of technology and human rights. She is currently leading research at SMEX, the leading digital rights organization in the Arab region, in addition to working on a range of projects with other organisations aimed at advancing protection for human rights in digital spaces. Afef holds a media studies MA (New Media and Digital Culture track) from the University of Amsterdam. She previously worked as a lead editor for Advox,  a project by Global Voices which specializes in reporting on the intersection of technology and human rights in the Global South, and a Research Analyst for Ranking Digital Rights.
